Republican Andy Barr today announced the formation of an Exploratory Committee to seek the 2010 Republican nomination for Congress in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District.  Louis Hillenmeyer of Louis’ Flower Power Shops in Lexington will serve as Committee Chairman.  Serving as Co-Chairs of the Exploratory Committee will be Rear Admiral William V. “Van” Alford, Jr., USN (Ret.); Priscilla Lynd, M.D.; Ray Ball; Warren Rogers; Tom Dupree, Jr.; Lee Greer; Phil Greer; Charles Sachatello, M.D.; Janey Moores; Thomas Slabaugh, M.D.; Thomas Slabaugh, Jr., M.D.; George Ginter, M.D.; Brad Cowgill; Brian Patton; and Anjum Bux, M.D.

“Today I am forming an Exploratory Committee to build support for a campaign in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District,” Barr said.  “Our country is at a crossroads and needs leadership that will bring balance to the national political discussion.  After talking with my wife, Carol, and the rest of our family, I am taking the initial steps necessary to travel the District, talk with potential supporters, and raise the resources necessary to launch a successful campaign.”

Garland “Andy” Barr, 36, is an attorney with the law firm of Kinkead & Stilz, PLLC.  He is also a part time instructor at the University of Kentucky where he teaches Constitutional Law.  Prior to his employment with Kinkead & Stilz, PLLC, he served as Deputy General Counsel to former Governor Ernie Fletcher.

Barr is a 1992 graduate of Henry Clay High School.  In 1996, he graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Philosophy.  From 1996 through 1998, Barr entered public service for the first time as a Legislative Assistant to U.S. Congressman Jim Talent (R-MO), where he staffed the Congressman’s service on the Speaker’s Health Care Reform Task Force.  In 2001, Barr graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law, where he was chosen to compete on the Moot Court National Team.

Barr presently serves on the Board of Directors of Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, the Friends of the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden, and the Leadership Lexington Steering Committee.  He is a member of the American, Kentucky and Fayette County Bar Associations, a 2007 graduate of Leadership Lexington, and a member of Christ Church Cathedral.  Barr is married to the former Eleanor Carol Leavell of Georgetown, Kentucky.  He is the son of Mr. Garland Hale Barr, III, C.P.A., founder of Barr, Anderson & Roberts, P.S.C., and the Rev. Donna Faulconer Barr, Deacon to the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington.

“Central Kentuckians deserve someone who represents their values,” stated Campaign Chairman Louis Hillenmeyer.  “Government bailouts, deficit spending, a single party with unchecked power, and a rapid expansion of the federal government have put our economy in turmoil.  Andy Barr seeks a new direction built on conservative leadership and Kentucky values.”
