Andy Barr Calls on Chandler to Oppose Reconciliation and to ‘Stop the Shortcuts’ on Health Care Reform

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY –  After a year of promoting government-run health care through backroom deals, it is crunch time for President Obama and his liberal allies in Congress.

Within days, Democrats in Congress will try to use a procedural shortcut to ram through Congress a radical version of health care reform.

“This ‘reconciliation’ procedure is simply a partisan tactic to pass a bill that the American people have already rejected,” said Andy Barr.  “It’s time to stop the shortcuts and listen to the American people.”

When health care legislation was considered by the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2009, Ben Chandler voted four times in favor of advancing the legislation (Roll Call #881, 882, 885, 886).  This month, there is some discussion among Democrats to use a procedure where Representatives won’t actually vote on the bill, only to ‘deem that is has passed’.

“The proposed legislation will destroy jobs here in Kentucky, radically increase government spending, raise taxes on families and small businesses, cut Medicare for seniors, force individuals out of health coverage they like, and allow for taxpayer funding of abortion,” said Barr.  “Americans have already rejected this reckless proposal.  In fact, a recent Rasmussen survey found that ‘61% of U.S. voters say Congress should scrap that plan and start all over again.’  It is time to stand up to Nancy Pelosi and stop advancing this reckless agenda.

“We need a Congressman who will stand up and fight those who want to circumvent the rules and ram bad policy through Congress.  I encourage voters to visit my website, andybarrforcongress.com, to learn more about what I would do to support meaningful health care reform that lowers health care costs without raising taxes or increasing spending.”
